Day 120 - They were There, now some are Here.

So as most people have heard, There.com is closing their doors tonight. Bone is going to attempt to live blog the last few hours of it tonight, so be sure you check out his blog.

I've heard people in SL grumbling. Noobs, more people, more competition, etc etc etc. But I don't think that way. I feel kind of sad for those of the There regulars who are having their place taken away from them. I've been in online communities before that have closed before. And as much as you tell people that you'll keep in touch, it's often like summer camp - you hug and cry and exchange addresses and promise to write, but in the end, you lose touch with some people who were, for a while, very important to you.

I just keep thinking, "What if it were us?" What if SL shut its doors and our virtual world was gone? What if we had to go to ... *whispers* Blue Mars? We'd be uncomfortable. We'd hate it. We'd probably lose friends. We might not find our niche again.

Although I know a few people who started at There and came to SL long ago, some people from There may never have come to SL before. Things are going to be so different for them. We don't need to make it worse.

I'm very sorry you guys are losing your virtual world. I hope you enjoy SL!

I can't even imagine if SL was gone tomorrow. :x Where would we go. Would our Lindens be cashed out? The thought of all the money and time and friends we have here and then for it to poof. Terrrrrible thought.

I welcome there.com users. SL is an exciting place.

We would go to Plurk duh! and to the naysayers..new residents means new friends, new content, and new customers..this is a good thing. Welcome There people!

It's sad that those things would even enter our minds. When did SL stop being a social venue and being more about business and the like?

I would be so sad if SL closed down. Welcome all the There residents to Second Life. Bring over everyone you know and have fun. :-)

Thanks, Ali!

I migrated from There to SL awhile ago.

SL can never be a replacement for There. Displaced There avatars shouldn't expect it to be. There and SL are very different beasts. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

I do hope some There avatars give SL a(nother) look.

Just don't expect to be able to hoverboard down the side of a volcano...

Do expect a (for the most part) solid, creative community. A place where residence create and do amazing things.

And... uh... Also expect penises. Lots and lots of penises.
